Graduation Weekend Lodging Between Boston and Worcester
Updated

Commencement season in Massachusetts packs dozens of ceremonies into about three weeks of May, and hotel rooms near campus go first. If you are sorting out graduation weekend lodging near Boston or Worcester for a whole family, a house halfway between the two cities can work better than six rooms on different floors. This guide lists the colleges within reach of Southborough, the 2027 dates we could confirm, and the cases where you should stay closer to campus.
Colleges within reach of Southborough
Southborough is a few minutes from the I-495 interchanges with both Route 9 and the Mass Pike (I-90). Worcester's colleges are west along those two roads, and the Wellesley, Newton and Waltham campuses are east. Drive times below are approximate, measured from Southborough town center in ordinary traffic. The Pike and Route 9 both slow badly at rush hour, and commencement mornings add campus traffic on top, so pad everything.
East, toward Boston
- Framingham State University, Framingham: about 15 to 20 minutes on Route 9.
- Wellesley College, Wellesley: about 25 to 30 minutes on Route 9.
- Babson College, Wellesley: about 30 minutes.
- Boston College, Chestnut Hill: about 35 minutes by the Pike, longer on a weekday morning.
West, toward Worcester
- Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts, North Grafton: about 20 minutes.
- Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Worcester: about 25 to 30 minutes.
- Clark University, Worcester: about 30 to 35 minutes.
- College of the Holy Cross, Worcester: about 30 to 35 minutes.
Harvard, MIT, Boston University and Northeastern are 40 minutes to an hour away, depending on the day. For a ceremony in Cambridge or downtown Boston with an early call time, stay in the city.
2027 commencement dates we could verify
These come from each school's own pages as of September 2026. Schools do move dates and times, so confirm on the linked page before you book anything that cannot be refunded.
- WPI: graduate ceremony May 13, 2027, and undergraduate ceremony May 14, 2027, per the WPI commencement page.
- Wellesley College: Friday, May 21, 2027, at 10:30 a.m., per Wellesley's commencement page.
- Framingham State: Saturday, May 22, 2027, per the 2026-2027 academic calendar.
- Boston College: Monday, May 24, 2027, per the BC events calendar.
- Holy Cross: Friday, May 28, 2027, per the Holy Cross commencement page. The college lists the DCU Center in downtown Worcester as the location, so do not route the family to the campus by habit.
We could not find 2027 dates on the official pages for Babson, Clark or the Cummings School at the time of writing. Cummings notes that its graduates take part in a university-wide ceremony on the Medford/Somerville campus as well as a school ceremony in Grafton, so check which one your family is attending.
Book early, and what early means
Holy Cross says it plainly on its commencement page: book accommodations early. That applies to every school on this list. The rooms nearest each campus go first.
Note the clustering in the list above. Wellesley, Framingham State, Boston College and Holy Cross all fall within eight days, May 21 to 28, 2027. When several ceremonies share a week, the whole region tightens.
Two questions to settle before you book anything:
- How many nights do you need? Baccalaureate services, department receptions and senior dinners usually fall on the day or two before the ceremony. Ask your student for the full schedule.
- Who is actually coming? The headcount for a graduation tends to grow.
Why a house suits a graduation
A graduation is a family event with one ceremony in the middle of it. The rest is meals and waiting around, and those go better in a house.
Southborough Garden Retreat sleeps 14 in four bedrooms plus sofa beds. The first-floor primary suite, with no stairs, is the obvious room for grandparents. The dining table seats 12, which solves the hardest problem of graduation weekend: a restaurant table for 12 on the night every other family wants one. Cook, fire up the gas grill or the kamado smoker, or ask the host, Jillian, for a caterer or personal chef recommendation and have the celebration dinner at home.
If relatives staying elsewhere will join you for a meal, arrange that with the host beforehand. Daytime gatherings are possible by arrangement. The house is on a quiet residential street and is not the place for the graduate's party with 40 classmates. The gatherings page has the details.
When to stay near campus instead
- Very early call times. If the graduate has to line up at 7:30 a.m. and the family wants good seats, a 35-minute drive in unknown traffic is a stressful way to start the day.
- Small groups. Two parents and a sibling do not need a whole house. Take the hotel the college recommends.
- Relatives with limited mobility. Ask the commencement office about accessible drop-off, seating and shuttles before you decide where to stay.
Parking at every one of these campuses is controlled on commencement day. Read the school's guest page for lots and shuttles, leave with a wide margin, and carpool.
Parents' and family weekends
Fall family weekends fill hotels too, on a smaller scale. Wellesley's Friends and Family Weekend is October 23 to 25, 2026, according to the college's parents and families page. Late October is also often the peak for fall color in this part of the state, so a visit can double as a foliage trip. The fall foliage guide covers where to go.
