Hiking in MetroWest Massachusetts in July

Updated

Hiking in MetroWest Massachusetts in July is a matter of timing. The woods are at their fullest and the days are still long, with sunset after 8 PM all month, but afternoons are hot and humid and often end in a thunderstorm. Walk early, keep it under shade, finish in the water, and July is a fine month. Set off at noon and it is not.

What July is really like

Expect a run of days in the high 80s or above every summer, with humidity that makes 85 feel worse. Thunderstorms build after lunch and arrive in the late afternoon, so plan a long walk for the morning and keep the evening for a short one. Carry more water than you think you need, and a hat for the open fields.

Mosquito season is under way. The Department of Public Health updates its West Nile virus and EEE risk maps by town through the summer, and its advice is to use repellent whenever you are outdoors, wear long sleeves, and avoid the hours between dusk and dawn in peak season. Check the map for the towns you plan to walk in before an evening outing.

Hiking in MetroWest Massachusetts in July: five shaded choices

The reservoir and the aqueduct

The Sudbury Reservoir Trail is under trees for most of its five miles, with the water beside you the whole way. The overlapping Aqueduct Trail is flat, 10 to 12 feet wide and hard-packed, which suits a mixed-age group when it is hot. DCR's watershed rules prohibit swimming, wading, dogs and bikes, however inviting the water looks.

Purgatory Chasm

Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Sutton, about 35 minutes southwest, is a granite cleft with 2 miles of trails to rock formations DCR names as The Corn Crib, The Coffin and Lovers' Leap. The chasm floor stays noticeably cooler than the parking lot. It is a scramble rather than a stroll, so DCR tells visitors to keep clear of the edges and not to climb during or after rain, when the rock is slippery. A daily parking fee is charged in season.

Lake Cochituate

Cochituate State Park in Natick, about 20 minutes east, is three linked lakes with a swimming area, boat rentals and the Snake Brook Trail, a mild 1.5-mile walk DCR lists as a Heart Healthy route. It opens at 8 AM, charges for parking from late May to mid-October, and closes to new arrivals when it fills. Dogs are not allowed on the designated swimming areas from May 1 to September 15.

Hopkinton State Park, early

Ten minutes from Southborough, Hopkinton State Park has more than 10 miles of trails, a dam with the best views in the park, and two guarded beaches open until Labor Day. DCR says it is common for thousands of people to visit on a summer weekend day and the park closes when parking reaches capacity. Arrive at opening, walk first, then swim. Regatta Point Community Sailing rents kayaks and paddle boards on the reservoir in season.

The Charles at Broadmoor

Mass Audubon's Broadmoor in Natick, about 30 minutes east, has eight miles of trails, a 430-foot marsh boardwalk and a 1-mile Charles River loop where Mass Audubon says cardinal flower blooms along the river edge in summer. Closed Mondays except holidays, admission for non-members, no dogs.

Drive times are approximate, from Southborough town center, and vary with traffic, especially on Route 9 and the Mass Pike.

Ticks and farm fields

Tick checks do not stop in July. The state's tick guidance rates spring, summer and fall as the highest-risk seasons for deer ticks, and the nymphs active now are the size of a poppy seed. Light-colored clothing, trousers tucked into socks, DEET or permethrin, and a daily check for every person in the house.

At Chestnut Hill Farm, the free Trustees farm in Southborough, the two miles of trail cross hay fields that are in active use, and the Trustees note that trails may close for agricultural work. Stay on the marked path, treat every electric fence as live, and visit the farm store at the first parking area afterwards.

Hunting is close to nil this month. The MassWildlife season summary lists only a handful of year-round species and crows on certain weekdays in July, so you are unlikely to meet anyone in camouflage.

Back at the house

The hot afternoon is what the house is for. Southborough Garden Retreat has a games room with a full-size pool table and pinball, a projector room with a 100-inch screen, and a gym for anyone who wants to sweat indoors. In the evening the gazebo and the patio under the string lights are cooler than any room. Families should also read our guide to day trips with kids.
