A Wellness Weekend Near Boston: Plan Your Own Retreat

Updated

Glass-walled plant room with potted plants, a large boulder and woodland outside the windows

Packaged retreats give you a schedule, a shared room and somebody else's idea of dinner. A wellness weekend near Boston that you run yourselves runs on your own clock and lets you skip the 6 a.m. class without apologising. Here is how to put one together in Southborough, about 30 minutes from downtown Boston, with the nearby studios, spas and gardens we could verify.

A note on expectations. This is a weekend of walks, baths, cooking and early nights. The house sits on a quiet residential street and does not host parties, so if the group wants cocktails and dancing, Boston or Worcester is the better base.

What the house gives you

Southborough Garden Retreat is a private whole house that sleeps 14, and a group of six to ten leaves everyone plenty of room. The useful parts:

  • The plant room. A glass-ceilinged, all-season room full of plants, used for meditation and yoga.
  • The gym. Peloton, Tonal, stair climber, rowing machine, kettlebells, free weights and yoga equipment.
  • The primary suite bath. A jetted jacuzzi tub and a rainfall shower, on the first floor. Agree on a rota, or the first person in will stay in.
  • The library. More than 1,000 books and a chair.
  • The grounds. Over an acre, with paths inspired by Japanese garden design, a pond with fish and frogs, and stone stairs up to a rock seat in the woods. Take your coffee up there alone at least once.
  • The bedrooms. White-noise machines in every one. Sleep is the point of the weekend.

A loose schedule

The best version of this weekend has two fixed points a day and nothing else.

Friday. Check-in is after 3:00 PM. Shop on the way (there are large supermarkets along Route 9), cook something simple, light one of the fireplaces, go to bed early.

Saturday.

  • Yoga in the plant room. One of you leads, or you follow a video.
  • A long breakfast.
  • The Sudbury Reservoir Trail, which is a short walk away. It runs along the reservoir and links to the Boroughs Loop and the Aqueduct Trail if you want to go further. The Town of Southborough keeps trail pages and maps.
  • Afternoon: spa appointments or nothing at all.
  • Cook dinner together at the induction range, with the stocked spice rack to work from. Or have Jillian, the host, recommend a personal chef and let someone else handle it.
  • A film in the projector room, or puzzles and board games by the fire.

Sunday. A slower walk, a good brunch, and check-out by 11:00 AM with no chore list to work through.

Studios, spas and gardens nearby

We have no arrangement with any of these. They are close, they have their own websites, and you should check schedules and book directly. Drive times are approximate, from Southborough town center, and Route 9 in particular slows down on Saturday afternoons.

Classes

  • Every Body Balance in Southborough runs yoga, Pilates, barre and spin. Drop-ins are welcome for regular classes. They ask you to register at least an hour ahead, and they also list private group sessions.
  • Release Well-Being Center on Route 9 in Westborough, about 10 to 15 minutes away, combines yoga, meditation and fitness classes with a full spa. Ask what is open to non-members before you go.

Spa treatments

  • Release, above, offers massage, facials and body treatments, plus reiki and reflexology.
  • Nicholas Michaels Spa in Northborough, about 15 to 20 minutes away, offers massage, facials, body treatments, manicures and pedicures.

For a group, call rather than book online. Fitting five massages into one afternoon takes a person with the whole appointment book in front of them.

Gardens and farms

  • Chestnut Hill Farm in Southborough is a 170-acre working farm owned by The Trustees, with about two miles of easy loop trails through hayfields and woods and a seasonal farm stand.
  • Garden in the Woods in Framingham, about 20 to 25 minutes away, is Native Plant Trust's 45-acre woodland garden of New England native plants. It closes for the winter, so check dates.
  • New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill in Boylston, about 25 minutes away via I-495 and I-290, is open year-round. Its glass conservatories make it the best cold-weather option on this list.

Food

A few approaches that keep it easy:

  • Assign each meal to a pair, not a person. Nobody spends the weekend as the cook.
  • Use the kamado smoker or the gas grill for Saturday dinner if the weather holds. The patio has string lights and a gazebo, so dinner can stay outside.
  • Decide about alcohol beforehand, as a group, so nobody feels awkward either way.

Getting here

From Boston it is a straight run west on the Mass Pike, about 30 minutes from downtown when the road is clear and noticeably longer on a Friday after 3 p.m. Leave before lunch or after 7. Friends coming from Worcester, Providence or New Hampshire arrive by I-495, which passes right by town.

Who this suits

Groups of friends marking a birthday or a hard year, sisters, a yoga teacher bringing a few students, new mothers who want one full night of sleep. Bachelorette weekends are not a fit for this house. If the plan is louder than a conversation, pick somewhere else.
