Where to Stay Near Worcester, MA With a Group

Working out where to stay near Worcester, MA is easy if you are one person with a ticket to one show: book a downtown hotel and walk. It gets harder when twelve of you are coming for a graduation, a tournament or a convention and want to eat breakfast at the same table. Southborough is about 25 to 30 minutes east of downtown Worcester by car, and for some groups that trade works well. For others it does not, and this guide tries to say which is which.
What brings people to Worcester
DCU Center
The DCU Center on Foster Street is an arena and a convention center under one roof. The arena takes big concerts, college sports and the Worcester Railers, the city's ECHL hockey team, who play there from October into April. The convention side hosts trade shows and the sort of weekend competition that brings whole teams of families to town.
The venue does not run its own parking. Its parking and directions page lists nearby garages, including the municipal garage on Major Taylor Boulevard a block or two from the doors.
Polar Park
Polar Park in the Canal District is home to the Worcester Red Sox, Boston's Triple-A team, known to everyone as the WooSox. It opened in 2021 and holds about 9,500. There is no single stadium lot; the team's parking page maps the lots and garages around the district. For a mixed-age group a minor-league game is an easy evening, and tickets are far easier to come by than at Fenway.
Next door on Kelley Square, the Worcester Public Market has a couple of dozen food stalls and shops under one roof, which solves the problem of feeding ten people who all want something different before a game. It is closed early in the week.
Museums
The Worcester Art Museum on Salisbury Street is better than most visitors expect: European, Asian and American collections, and a gallery of arms and armor that tends to win over children who claimed not to like museums. It is currently open Wednesday to Sunday, youth 17 and under get in free, and parking is free in the museum's lots.
The EcoTarium on Harrington Way is a science and nature museum with indoor exhibits, a planetarium, a small train, and outdoor animal habitats that include river otters and mountain lions. It is closed Mondays, parking is free, and ticket sales stop an hour before closing. With children under ten, allow most of a day.
For an evening, The Hanover Theatre downtown brings in touring Broadway shows, comedians and concerts.
Colleges and hospitals
Worcester is a college town several times over: WPI, College of the Holy Cross, Clark University, Assumption, Worcester State and UMass Chan Medical School among them. Graduations cluster in May, hotel rooms within the city go months ahead, and prices rise to match. Our graduation weekend guide has more on timing.
Families also come for longer, quieter reasons, including treatment or a new baby at UMass Memorial Medical Center. A house with a real kitchen and room to be alone for an hour is a kinder base for a week of hospital visits than a hotel room.
The drive from Southborough
Downtown Worcester is roughly 17 miles from Southborough town center. There are two normal routes: Route 9 west through Westborough and Shrewsbury, which is direct but has traffic lights and a bridge over Lake Quinsigamond that backs up at rush hour; or I-495 to I-290, which is longer on the map and usually steadier. Allow 25 to 30 minutes off-peak and 40 or more on a weekday around 5 PM. Times vary with traffic, especially on Route 9 and the Mass Pike.
Holy Cross sits on the south side of the city and the EcoTarium on the east side, so both are a little quicker to reach from Southborough than the downtown venues. WPI and the art museum are beyond downtown: add five to ten minutes.
Where to stay near Worcester, MA: when a hotel wins
- You are going to a late concert at the DCU Center and want to walk back afterwards.
- You plan to drink at the ballgame and nobody wants to be the driver.
- Your event starts at 7 AM downtown three days running.
When a house in Southborough works
- The group is large enough that hotel rooms scatter you across floors.
- Half the party also has plans in Boston. Southborough is about 30 minutes from downtown Boston in the other direction, by the Mass Pike, so it splits the difference.
- You have grandparents, toddlers or both, and need space, naps and a kitchen.
- Worcester's hotels are sold out or priced for graduation, which happens every May.
Southborough Garden Retreat is a private whole-house rental that sleeps 14 comfortably: two king rooms, a queen, a bunk room with eight spots, and sofa beds across three living areas. The handmade dining table seats 12 and the kitchen is set up for real cooking, with an induction range and a stocked spice rack. For the hours between events there is a games room with a full-size pool table and pinball, a projector room with a 100-inch screen, and a gym.
It is a quiet house on a residential street: no smoking, no parties. Check-in is after 3 PM and check-out is by 11 AM, with no chore list on the way out, which helps on a graduation Sunday.
