A Winter Weekend Getaway Near Boston, With Skiing Nearby

A winter weekend getaway near Boston does not have to mean four hours of driving to Vermont and a cabin with one bathroom. MetroWest in January is quiet and cold, and close enough to the city that you can leave after work on Friday and be by a fire before eight. This is a plan for a group that wants some snow, some time outdoors and a lot of time indoors, with Southborough as the base.

Skiing within an hour

Wachusett Mountain

Wachusett Mountain in Princeton is the closest real ski hill to Boston and the reason a ski weekend from Southborough works at all. It has about 1,000 feet of vertical, snowmaking, and night skiing, which matters in a month when it is dark by five. Nobody will mistake it for Stowe, but it is about 50 minutes from Southborough town center, mostly on I-290 and I-190, which means you can ski a half day and be back for lunch.

Weekends and school vacation weeks are crowded. Go early, go at night, or go on a weekday if you can. Check the mountain's site for conditions, hours and tickets before you set out.

Ski Ward

Ski Ward in Shrewsbury is about 20 minutes away along Route 9. It is small, and that is its virtue. It runs lessons for all abilities, rents equipment, and has a snow tubing hill, the TubaSlide, with its own lifts and up to 12 lanes. For first-timers, young children and the person in your group who only wants to tube, it is an easier day than Wachusett.

Cross-country

The Weston Ski Track, about 25 minutes east on the Mass Pike, is a cross-country ski and snowshoe center on a DCR golf course beside the Charles River. It makes its own snow on a lit loop, so it can be open when the woods are bare, and it rents gear and teaches lessons.

Snowshoeing and winter walks in town

When there is natural snow, you do not need to drive at all. The trails around the Sudbury Reservoir are ungroomed and unplowed, and quiet in winter. The town lists its reservoir-side Bay Circuit Trail section as suitable for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, and Beals Preserve, owned by the Southborough Open Land Foundation, welcomes both as well.

Without snow, the same paths make a good cold walk. Two cautions: stay off the reservoir ice, whatever it looks like, and remember that dogs are not allowed on DCR watershed land. Our trails guide has the details. From Southborough Garden Retreat the Sudbury Reservoir Trail is a short walk away.

Holiday lights and evenings out

Three seasonal events are worth building an evening around. All are ticketed and popular nights can sell out, so book ahead.

• Night Lights at New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill in Boylston, about 25 to 30 minutes away. The garden lists the 2026 season as November 21, 2026 to January 3, 2027, from 4 to 10 PM daily, with public ticket sales opening on October 23.
• Christmas by Candlelight at Old Sturbridge Village, about 45 to 50 minutes west on the Mass Pike. The 1830s village opens on selected afternoons and evenings from late November through December. Check the village's event page for this year's dates.
• Winter Wonderland at Southwick's Zoo in Mendon, about 30 to 35 minutes south: a walk-through evening event of holiday lights and lanterns in the zoo grounds. Dates are on the zoo's site.

The indoor half of a winter weekend getaway

Here the house does the work. Southborough Garden Retreat is a private whole-house rental that sleeps 14 comfortably, and it was set up for staying in.

• Several living areas, each with a fireplace, so the readers and the talkers can separate.
• A projector room with a 100-inch screen and surround sound.
• A games room with a full-size pool table, collector pinball machines, board games and puzzles.
• A glass-ceilinged plant room that stays green all winter, used for yoga and for sitting among leaves while it snows overhead.
• A first-floor primary suite with a jetted jacuzzi tub, which earns its keep after a day on skis.

The kitchen has an induction range and a stocked spice rack, and the dining table seats 12. If nobody wants to cook, Jillian, the host, can recommend personal chefs and caterers.

One honest note: this is a quiet house on a residential street, not a ski-lodge party. If your plan is to drink until 3 AM with music on, book somewhere else. If your plan is soup, a film and an early start for first chair, it fits.

A sample Saturday

• 7:30 AM: coffee, then drive to Wachusett for first lifts.
• 12:30 PM: off the hill before the afternoon crowd, back to the house for lunch.
• 4:30 PM: drive to Boylston for Night Lights (with tickets bought in advance).
• 7:30 PM: dinner at the long table, then the projector room.

Getting around in winter

Southborough sits at the junction of I-495 and Route 9, a few minutes from the Mass Pike, and in a storm the highways are cleared well before the side roads. Drive times above are approximate, from Southborough town center, and vary with traffic and weather, especially on the Mass Pike and Route 9. If a nor'easter is forecast for your arrival day, come early or come late.
