Gardens to Visit Near Boston: A Garden Lover's Weekend

The best gardens to visit near Boston are not in Boston. Two of the finest in New England sit west of the city, with Southborough between them, and three more are within 45 minutes to the east. This is a long weekend for people who read plant labels and have opinions about mulch.

Garden in the Woods, Framingham

About 20 to 25 minutes from Southborough town center. Garden in the Woods is the botanic garden of Native Plant Trust. It is 45 acres of glacial ridges and hollows with a brook, a pond and wetlands, planted with more than 1,000 species of New England natives.

You will not find borders or bedding here. You will find what a New England woodland looks like when skilled people edit it for decades. The main route is a mile-long gravel loop. Native Plant Trust suggests an hour to an hour and a half; plant people should double that.

The garden is seasonal, open from spring into late November, with shorter autumn hours and a few closed days in October for a members' event. Dogs are not permitted. The shop sells native plants. Check hours and admission on the official page before you go.

New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill, Boylston

About 25 to 30 minutes. New England Botanic Garden is the big one: nearly 200 acres on a hilltop with long views over the Wachusett Reservoir. It has formal and naturalistic gardens, woodland trails, an apple orchard and The Ramble, a family garden. Two conservatories, the Orangerie and the Limonaia, make it a winter destination as well.

It is open daily all year, currently 10 AM to 5 PM with last admission at 4:30. Advance tickets are recommended for busy periods and cost a little less than walk-up. Allow three hours.

The Garden at Elm Bank, Wellesley

About 30 minutes east. The Garden at Elm Bank is the home of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, founded in 1829. It is a set of distinct gardens beside the Charles River: the Bressingham Garden, an Italianate garden, a trial garden and Weezie's Garden for Children.

Elm Bank is seasonal: for 2026 the society lists April 1 to November 24. Some days close early for private events, so look at the visit page first. Parking is free. No dogs.

Arnold Arboretum, Boston

About 45 minutes, more in traffic. Harvard's Arnold Arboretum is 281 acres and more than 15,000 accessioned plants in the Jamaica Plain neighbourhood of Boston. It is always free, open sunrise to sunset, with free street parking along the Arborway.

This is a tree collection first. The lilacs have their own festival, Lilac Sunday, each spring, and there is a bonsai and penjing collection; check the site for when it is on display.

Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge

About 40 to 45 minutes. Mount Auburn, founded in 1831, is a National Historic Landmark and an active cemetery, free and open daily. Climb Washington Tower for the view.

The rules reflect what it is: no dogs apart from service animals, no picnics, no jogging, no sitting on the grass. Birders know it for spring migration.

Best months

• Late April to early June: the peak. Woodland wildflowers bloom at Garden in the Woods before the tree canopy closes, lilacs flower at the Arnold, and Mount Auburn is full of blossom and warblers.
• June to August: Elm Bank's displays and trial beds are at their fullest.
• September and October: asters, grasses and foliage colour, with all five open. Our fall foliage guide has more.
• Late November to March: Garden in the Woods and Elm Bank are closed. Tower Hill's conservatories and its ticketed Night Lights evenings carry the season.

How to pair two in a day

Southborough sits at the junction of I-495 and Route 9, a few minutes from the Mass Pike (I-90). Tower Hill is reached by I-495 and I-290. The eastern gardens are a run down Route 9 or the Pike.

• Garden in the Woods plus Elm Bank. Both lie east along the Route 9 corridor, roughly 20 to 25 minutes apart. Do the woodland in the morning and Elm Bank after lunch.
• Tower Hill on its own. It is large enough to fill a day. The Worcester Art Museum is about 20 minutes beyond it; see the Worcester guide.
• The Arnold plus Mount Auburn. Both are in the city and free. Take the Pike in after 9:30 AM, do Mount Auburn first, then cross the river to the arboretum. Leave the city before 3:30 PM or after 6:30.

All times are approximate, from Southborough town center, and vary with traffic, especially on the Mass Pike and Route 9.

A base for garden people

Southborough Garden Retreat is a private whole-house rental, and the name is earned. It stands in over an acre of landscaped grounds with paths inspired by Japanese garden design. There is a pond with fish and frogs, crossed by a stone slab. Stone stairs climb to a rock seat in the woods, and there is a gazebo and a patio with string lights for comparing notes on the day.

Indoors, a glass-ceilinged plant room stays green in every season and is used for yoga, meditation and reading among the leaves. The Sudbury Reservoir Trail is a short walk away for a before-breakfast loop.

It sleeps 14 comfortably and the dining table seats 12. To be plain about the scale: this is a private garden of an acre or so, not a botanic garden. After a day of other people's planting, though, it is good to come back to some of your own.
